In the last decade more wineries have begun to use silicon bungs. Wooden bungs tends to allow more evaporation because their fit isn't as snug. Whereas the soft, silicon bungs provide a good seal with the barrel.

If a barrel begins to leak, we will mend it with barrel spials which are small wedges of oak wooden triangular pegs that are hammered into the point at which the leak occurs or a longer spial which is like a pencil shaped stave holder that is hammered into the leak itself, expands and blocks the flow.
