Each barrel has a tag on the front containing the following information:
  • The varietal, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah or Chardonnay.
  • The vintage year.
  • The stainless steel fermentation tank of origination.
  • The date of transfer from the fermentation tank to the barrel.
  • Vineyards from where the wine originated.
Each barrel is also inventoried with:
  • The time the barrel arrived at the winery.
  • The date the barrel began to be used for aging.
  • Many of the barrels will have letters on the heads i.e., M+ MTTH. These letters simply define how deep a toast the barrel has received. Medium + toast is pretty heavy, almost the maximum toast. The mtth = medium toasted barrel and the second th would mean that the heads were toasted as well because they provide 20% of the barrel's interior surface area.
